This subspecies (listed as a state "Species of Concern", and petitioned for listing as an endangered species) is described in some literature as restricted to openings in redwood forest in San Mateo and Santa Cruz Counties. However, there are no redwoods here. The primary tree here is Douglas Fir with an oak understory; other trees in the opening included Coastal Live Oak, Pacific Madrone, California Bay, and Tanoak, and other butterflies at the location included Coronis Fritillary (S. coronis), California Sister (Adelpha bredowii), and Woodland Skipper (Ochlodes sylvanoides).
